In 2023, we saw a flying VW Kombi, and the number of NRC 1 Four WD cars increased from four to eleven. New brave Warriors joined our ranks to contend in the National as well as Northern Regions Championship. Our regulars we back braver and more determined to be the ultimate Champions of the Season. On average, at least 28 vehicles lined up at the start line for each event. This is undeniably strong evidence that our sport is well-liked and beloved. To you, the Key-board Warriors of the world I say “What have you got to say for yourselves now, hey?'”

While we had plenty to celebrate, we also encountered substantial loss. Billy te Water, a respected Businessman, Family man and enthusiast of the Secunda Rally, met a tragic end in January when he was struck by lightning on the legendary TW Stene stage situated on his farm. Billy will be fondly remembered for his calm demeanour and unwavering support in ensuring the success of the Secunda Rally, which is currently in its 10th year on the South African Rally Calendar. The Community of Secunda is where Billy’s heart and passion were felt the most. RIP Billy – You will forever be a part of us!

Another prominent figure in the South African as well as African Rally scene has passed away. Willie du Plessis has held various important roles in the motorsport industry, including serving as a Clerk of Course and organizer of the Sasol Rally for 25 Years, being the former President of the NRC commission, acting as an FIA Steward on African Rallies, and fulfilling the roles of a trainer, mentor, and friend. Willie’s departure has created a significant void and his absence is profoundly felt. We thank Willie’s family for sharing a Legend with us for so many years. Thank you Willie for your selfless contribution to Rallies. We miss you dearly!

We were profoundly disappointed when we had to cancel the 1st event of the year scheduled to take place in the Western Cape. Due to the fact that Gauteng and Surrounds are home to the majority of National participants—who cited cost as the most important factor—the Cape Overberg Rally did not garner the necessary backing to host the event as a National Event.

The NRC is cognizant of the difficulties and expenses associated with travelling to the Western Cape, but it is also conscious of the significance of the exposure and inclusivity required for the Championship. Stunning rally stages can be found in the Western Cape, and we should promote our sport to all of the provinces.

A Rain Date event is on the cards for October 11 & 12! With no concrete plans in sight, this could very well be a well-deserved period of rest and rejuvenation. Stay tuned for any changes.
